Our annual Sportsmen’s Day, sponsored by estate agents Debbie Fortune, ended with two ladies teams in the final four for the first time. It was won by The 4 Js, Jean Spikes, Julie Made, Jayne Cole and Janet Stuckey from Yatton. They beat last year’s winners the Loafers – this year represented by Rick Hutchinson, Tony Palmer, Phil Mellor and Ed Mellor (who subbed in the final for Colin Maddocks) – in a rather one-sided final.
Third place went to previous winners the Cofers who beat the Cider Girls – through to the last four for the first time – on the final end in a closely-contested game.
The Cofers were represented by Dave Towler, Clive Burlton, Graham Lovesey and Tim Young while the Cider Girls were led – possibly even led astray – by Beth Andrews, Rachel Clifton, Debbie Johnston and Amie Johnston.
The club was packed with more than 130 bowlers and spectators as well as all the club members who were on hand to help out. Two rain stoppages failed to dampen spirits and there is already a waiting list for 2020.
