Congresbury Bowling Club “Australian Rules” Singles and Pairs Finals Day  was held at Congresbury Bowling Club on Saturday 5th September 2020.

“Australian Rules” – All Matches are played over ten ends, Australian pairs is an interesting variation on the game of bowls where the main difference is in the format of the play in which both players alternate between being the lead and the skip. Australian singles format of play is that the first player bowls two bowls, then the opponent their four bowls, followed by the first player their final two bowls; players reverse play order for the next end.

In the singles final, Valerie Harding took a early 8-1 lead against Mens 2019 captain Clive Shipway. Clive levelled the match at 8-8, but Valerie took the last two ends to win 12-8 in an extremely competitive and entertaining match.

The pairs final saw Brian Herbison and club junior Kimi Powell play against married couple Chris and Geoff Wilcock. It was to be a match where the pairing of Brian and Kimi outplayed the Wilcock’s and deliver a deserved victory 14-2.

Our thanks to all players who made these competitions a success this year and special thanks to Club Life Member Alan Fisher for presenting the finalists with their trophies.  Finally, a big thank you to the Club Competition secretary Andy Knight and his team for successfully organising this years cup competition.
