Congresbury Bowls Club once again made their mark at the annual Clevedon Bowls Tournament, delivering an incredible week of performances that saw their colours fly high in final after final. The tournament opened with a damp Monday, but after that there was just one more brief wet interruption, leaving six glorious days of play for the bowlers to shine.
For the third time in four years, the Mixed Pairs Trophy returned to Congresbury. This year’s champions were the sensational pairing of 12-year-old Zach Broom — skipping with skill far beyond his years — and his partner Stef Branfield of Clevedon. In a thrilling final, they overcame fellow Congresbury duo Fliss Sheldrake and Kimi Powell in a superb display of precision and teamwork.
The Men’s Triples title also came home for the second time in three years, with the formidable trio of Barry Baker, Reg Birmingham, and Clive Shipway battling through a string of tough matches to defeat a strong Clevedon Prom side in the final.
Meanwhile, the dynamic young team of Fliss Sheldrake, Lydia Sheldrake, and Madi King came agonisingly close to making history as the youngest-ever winners of the Ladies Triples, but were narrowly edged out after a stunning final bowl from the West Backwell Ladies’ skip.
And to cap off the club’s glittering week, Lucas Powell proudly lifted the Good Neighbour Cup, adding yet another trophy to Congresbury’s growing cabinet.
