Sunday July 30th Somerset Under 18’s Singles Competition
Pictured a very wet and soggy group of Congresbury BC Juniors playing in the Somerset Under 18 singles tournament. Continuous rain stopped the play outside and they continued the competition indoors at St Andrews (WSM) BC. In the end Zach came 3rd in the tournament – well done!

CBC Juniors play first indoor match against City of Bristol – 13 November 2021
Well done to Congresbury Juniors who won their first-ever indoor bowls match against City of Bristol today by 30-27. They all did absolutely amazing, some playing their first-ever match. Thank you to City of Bristol for hosting us, a great morning of indoor bowls.
City of Bristol and Congresbury were equally matched across the three rinks, with some excellent shots and teamwork from the young players many playing in new positions and three of our Juniors playing their first-ever match. Special mention also has to go to our most inexperienced team who fought back from being 7-2 down to win 12-11, well done Theo, Mia and Zach!
Scores from the three rinks:
Katy/Kimi/Madi won 10-8
Ed/Aaron/Lucas drew 8 all
Theo/Mia/Zach won 12-11
CBC Juniors play in Somerset U18 Tournament – Ashcombe 24 July 2021
The format for the day consisted of opening games of singles, winners going on to 2nd round. The losing players going into a draw to create teams for the Pairs Plate.
The standard of bowls all round was very high and Congresbury Juniors certainly played their part with many positive comments not only on the standard of bowling but on the way they conducted themselves.
Winners from the first round were Madi and Kimi who, for a change beat Lucas in an intense brotherly game.
Aaron, Zach and Lucas, having bowled well, went into the draw for the Plate. Aaron drawing Cameron, with Zach and Lucas with Jack and Chloe, also from Purnells.
Kimi won his next singles game against the probable favourite, Cameron from Purnells, and Madi also won against her good friend Katy from Ashcombe, setting up an all Congresbury semi-final clash.
Meanwhile Zach and Jack, despite Aaron having his best game, were the winners along with Lucas and Chloe, from the other semi-final.
Kimi, still In fine form was on this occasion too strong for Madi and so was into the final against Jacob Crouch from Ilminster.
Congresbury were well represented in the Pairs Final, Zach on one side, Lucas on the other. A great game saw Lucas and Chloe emerge winners.
Going on at the same Kimi couldn’t quite reach the heights of previous rounds and lost out in a very good game to Jacob.
Overall a very good advert for Somerset Under 18’s and a day which well and truly put Congresbury Juniors on the map.

CBC Juniors invite local team for first friendly
Sunday 6th September 2020 saw Congresbury Bowls Club Juniors team compete in their first ever friendly match at home against Purnells Bowls Club Juniors. It’s testament to both clubs that their Junior teams have achieved the commitment and standard required to independently take on a morning of 15 ends of pairs and triple matches.
Congresbury’s Junior pairs team was made up of Aaron Broom and Kimi Powell (both age 13). They got off to a fantastic start against some top level bowls from the Purnells pair, winning early ends by holding their nerve and placing some excellently bowled reply shots. By mid game, Congresbury were 9-2 up and looking comfortable. However, Purnells made a swift comeback and despite some hard fought ends, Congresbury found themselves drawing 10-10 going into the final end. It was a spectacular final end with both teams under pressure to find the winning shot – that winning shot eventually proving impossible to find (even after a thorough umpire measure) and the game finishing at 10-10.
Further along the green, the triples match was equally as impressive, with Lauren Knight (age 9), Lewis Harris (age 10) and Lucas Powell (age 10) putting pressure on the Purnells triples team right from the start. With a fairly even score over the first few ends, Purnells began to gradually pull the score their way, securing some high scoring ends mid match. Congresbury rallied and replied with some great teamwork, tactics and support for each other and managed to win a further few ends but despite their efforts and camaraderie, ultimately couldn’t catch Purnells with the game ending 18-7.
With such high standard of Junior bowls on offer, presentation of club pins for the opposition, end-of-match speeches from each team and new friends made, the morning was a huge success. Promises of rematches over the indoor season having already been made, watch this space for further Congresbury Vs Purnells updates!
Outdoor season comes to a close for the Juniors
This week marks the last week of the Junior outdoor season with a final session and presentation on Saturday 5 September at 10am and their first team match against Purnells on Sunday morning.
There has been real dedication from the Juniors (and parents) as well as coaches who have each week come rain or shine turned up to train and play. This season the Juniors held an internal competition each week with them all scoring points for every shot they won. The Juniors had a great time with them all winnning or drawing at least three of their games showing how talented our young bowlers are!
The final result of the competition:
Well done to them all!
Somerset 2020 Under 18 Singles Competition Saturday 22nd August – Juniors make their mark at County event
Congresbury Juniors took on their first outdoor singles event at Ashcombe Park Bowling Club on Saturday 22nd August. Despite a mixture of sunshine and downpours, one thing to remain consistent was our Junior team’s commitment, resilience and remarkable performance. Every one of them demonstrated resolve well beyond their years, playing a total 60 ends each over seven hours.
At just seven years old, Congresbury’s youngest bowler Zach Broom not only showed lasting enthusiasm over the entire day but scored impressively highly in every game in his group, holding his nerve to beat a much older opponent 7-6 in an incredibly exciting game and going on to finish an impressive 5th place in Group B. With another ten years ahead of him in the Under 18s category, Zach Broom proved himself to be one to watch.
Playing alongside Zach in Group B was Lewis Harris who also scored well in every game played, winning two of his games. The second of Lewis’s wins was the final Round Robin game of the day to finish. Going into the last end at a score of 8-8, already having made an enviable comeback and under the added pressure of everyone watching, Lewis played a glorious final takeout shot to win the game with a huge grin, a victorious leap in the air and a well-deserved 4th place in his group.
Over in Group A, Congresbury’s Aaron Broom came up against some of the top players in the County. He consistently bowled well-placed discerning shots, often being denied a hard-fought end by the smallest of measures. Aaron won points in every game played, had some very close scores and stole some superbly fought ends against a County Middleton Cup opponent in what was to be one of the highlight games of the day. Truly holding his own against such high-level opponents Aaron finished 6th place in his group.
Also in Group A Congresbury’s Kimi Powell had to find the resolve to come back from an extremely tough first game against a Somerset County player, only to go on to play his brother in his next game. Having scored well but narrowly losing out on a win he showed real determination to come back to win his next two games, one of which was an incredible 10-7 victory against an established County player. A great performance which resulted in Kimi finishing 4th in his group.
Group A also played home to Congresbury’s 10-year-old Lucas Powell. Lucas went into the morning break placed second in his group, having won his first two games. His third game was against a National County opponent but this didn’t stop him winning two ends and taking some hotly contested points. It was neck and neck up to the last ends in his fourth and fifth games, with Lucas narrowly missing out on the fourth but winning the fifth against another established County player 9-8 to place 3rd overall in his group.
Together the team came away with a total of eight wins against some of the most formidable under 18 players in the County. Not bad for their debut outdoor tournament and placing Congresbury Juniors firmly on the map.
