The tournament opened with a damp Monday, but after that there was just one more brief wet interruption, leaving six glorious days of play for the bowlers to shine.
For the third time in four years, the Mixed Pairs Trophy returned to Congresbury. This year’s champions were the sensational pairing of 12-year-old Zach Broom — skipping with skill far beyond his years — and his partner Stef Branfield of Clevedon. In a thrilling final, they overcame fellow Congresbury duo Fliss Sheldrake and Kimi Powell in a superb display of precision and teamwork.

Meanwhile, the dynamic young team of Fliss Sheldrake, Lydia Sheldrake, and Madi King came agonisingly close to making history as the youngest-ever winners of the Ladies Triples, but were narrowly edged out after a stunning final bowl from the West Backwell Ladies’ skip.

And to cap off the club’s glittering week, Lucas Powell proudly lifted the Good Neighbour Cup, adding yet another trophy to Congresbury’s growing cabinet.

At the national event, Zach received expert coaching, a personalised player development plan, and had the opportunity to engage with key members of Bowls England’s Performance Team—a significant achievement for one of Congresbury’s rising stars.

Congresbury Juniors Perform at U18 National Open Singles at Oxford 11th & 12th May 2024

Four junior bowlers represented Congresbury Bowls Club at the Bowls England Under 18 National Singles event at Oxford City BC on 11th-12th May, where they competed against some of the top junior bowlers in the country.
Kimi Powell, Lucas Powell, Madi King and Zach Broom started the tournament on Saturday with the group stages. Each played three games, the results of which decided whether they went on to play in the Cup or the Plate on the Sunday. Some thrilling bowling and nail-biting tie breaks culminated in all four players winning two of their three games. Shot difference resulted in Kimi, Lucas and Madi qualifying for the Cup, and Zach the Plate.
Sunday continued the weekend’s sunny weather for the knockout stages. Madi and Kimi both had incredibly tight games against strong opponents, Kimi especially, playing against last year’s winner, Charlie Beeton, and each losing by only one point
Lucas and Zach continued the Congresbury success winning their next games, putting them through to the final 16 in the Cup and the Plate respectively. Unfortunately this was where hopes for trophies ended. Lucas won his first set convincingly, but his opposition came back to narrowly win the second and the tie break by a single shot. Zach struggled on a very tricky rink that his opponent got the measure of more quickly, and lost both sets. A great performance all round against an incredibly high standard of bowling.
